Friends of the Conservatory founder Rita Hobbs
Year after year, the Lynn University Conservatory of Music assembles a dream team of gifted young musicians from around the world with the aim to establish the ultimate standard for music education worldwide. There, in the first line of its mission statement, lies the roots of the conservatory’s success. And as with any great performance, the captivated audience may never see what takes place behind the curtain to make it all possible.
However, an exclusive group of music enthusiasts has earned the right to peek behind the curtain as they champion Lynn's high-quality music education through fundraising initiatives and community outreach. Meet the Friends of the Conservatory of Music.
"The Friends," as they are endearingly called by those who know them, are a volunteer organization that was assembled by Rita Hobbs in 2003. Hobbs, a respected leader in the Boca Raton community, turned her gaze toward Lynn when the Harid Music Conservatory became part of the university. Lynn immediately felt the financial pressure of the merger when they realized they needed to purchase a considerable number of pianos for student lessons. Many in the university saw a monumental challenge ahead of them; Hobbs saw the opportunity of a lifetime. She envisioned a small "friends group" to support the university.

"We always look forward to seeing students perform on stage at Lynn University. We are their biggest supporters and fondest followers."

Fast-forward to today, and that small "friends group" has grown to over 300 individuals who have raised over $4 million to support scholarships and help meet Conservatory of Music students' needs. The charitable group functions like a well-oiled machine, consistently fueled by its board members with annual gifts, hosting special events like the annual Gingerbread Holiday Concert, providing sponsorships and endowed scholarships to help students meet the costs of a first-rate music education.
"The Friends of the Conservatory of Music have been essential to the extraordinary growth and development of the Lynn University Conservatory of Music," said Dean Jon Robertson. "Their fundraising for scholarships and other student needs has been a driving force. The commitment of the Friends is inspirational to the faculty and students, as well as to the community."
It's not all hard work and effort for the Friends. As members of this commendable group, they do get an opportunity to sit back and enjoy the show every once in a while, with some nifty perks:
- The best seats in the house with opportunities to purchase tickets in advance
- Two free concerts and invitations to a members-only "Friendship Tea"
- Reminders about upcoming shows

"We always look forward to seeing students perform on stage at Lynn University. We are their biggest supporters and fondest followers," said Asa Loof, president of the Friends board since March 2022.
Celebrating 12 years of rewarding service on the board, Loof acknowledged the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic in the past few years: "During 2020, we were challenged with fundraising. Even though we couldn't have the annual Gingerbread Concert, we still needed to raise money for scholarships. That need did not go away."
The group's perseverance and unwavering commitment to elevate music education is why the Friends continue to endure after 19 years of service to Lynn. You can count on finding the Friends in the halls of the Keith C. and Elaine Johnson Wold Performing Arts Center, the Amarnick-Goldstein Concert Hall and the Snyder Sanctuary … settled in their seats, always alert and ready to celebrate music as the curtain rises.
As for upcoming events and the future of the Friends of the Conservatory of Music, Loof has a simple invitation: "Everyone will need to join us at a concert to see what we have planned next!"
